The TOEFL changed significantly in 2026
If your prep materials describe a roughly 4-hour test with a 20-minute essay and 60–90 minute Reading and Listening sections, they’re describing the retired format. Since 21 January 2026, the TOEFL iBT is a shorter, adaptive test around 2 hours total , with no scheduled break.

Frequently asked questions about TOEFL preparation in Malaysia
Yes, significantly. ETS redesigned the TOEFL iBT on 21 January 2026. It’s now shorter (about 2 hours, down from roughly 3–4.5 hours), adaptive, uses new task types, and is scored on a 1–6 scale rather than only 0–120.
Not entirely yet. Since the redesign, the primary score is 1–6 per section, aligned with CEFR. A comparable 0–120 overall score is still shown alongside it during a transition period expected to run through around January 2028, so universities can interpret results either way for now.

No. The 20-minute integrated Writing essay from the older format has been removed. Writing now consists of shorter tasks: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion.
No. It’s now around 8 minutes, using different task types (Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview) rather than the longer integrated tasks used previously.
