ACT Preparation in Malaysia Klang
If your child is applying to universities in the United States, the ACT is one of two admissions tests they can sit — the other being the SAT. Most American universities accept either, and many are now test-optional. Where the ACT still matters is in competitive admissions, merit scholarship eligibility and certain honours programmes.

The ACT changed in 2025 — here is what your child will actually sit
This matters more than it sounds. Most ACT prep books still on Malaysian shelves describe a test that no longer exists, and students who prepare from them walk into the exam expecting the wrong thing.
The redesigned test — usually called the enhanced ACT — is shorter, has fewer questions, and gives students more time per question. Science is now optional and no longer counts toward the Composite score.

The three core sections total 131 questions in roughly
2 hours 5 minutes of testing time. Adding Science brings
the total to 171 questions.
What changed from the old format
Total core questions fell from 215 to 131.
- English dropped from 75 questions to 50.
Math fell from 60 to 45.
Reading fell from 40 to 36. - Science moved from required to optional,
and is now scored separately rather than folded into the Composite. - Math answer choices were cut from five options to four,
which meaningfully improves the odds on any question a student has to reason through. - Students get noticeably more time per question across every section.
Reading gained the most.
One thing that did not change: the content standards.
The test is shorter. It is not easier.
Should your child take the optional Science section?
It depends on the university list. The Composite is now calculated from English, Math and Reading only, so skipping Science does not lower the Composite. But some universities and STEM programmes still want to see a Science score, and taking it produces a separate STEM score alongside Math.
Our general guidance: if your child is applying to engineering, medicine, computer science or any STEM-heavy programme, take it. The additional registration cost is small and the downside of not having it is larger than the downside of a mediocre Science score. We cover this decision in the first session once we know the target universities.

No. Science became optional with the 2025 redesign and is scored separately rather than counting toward the Composite. Whether your child should still take it depends on their university list, particularly for STEM programmes.
Roughly 2 hours 5 minutes of testing time for the three core sections. Science and Writing add about 40 minutes each. Plan for longer at the test centre once check-in and breaks are counted.
Each section is scored from 1 to 36. The Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading. Science, if taken, is reported as a separate score and combined with Math into a STEM score.
Our 20-hour one-to-one course is RM 3,600, plus a RM 250 registration fee for new students. That is separate from the ACT’s own registration fee, which is paid to ACT, Inc.
The core test is $68, with Science adding $4 and Writing adding $25. International registration differs from US registration — confirm current fees for Malaysia at act.org.
Eight weeks or more is ideal. The 20 hours can be compressed into less, but improvement on the ACT comes largely from repeated timed practice, and that needs time to work.
