Each of the 38 AP exams comes with its unique set of requirements, yet they share several common features:
- Most exams typically last between 2 to 3 hours.
- The initial section of the exam often includes multiple-choice questions.
- For each multiple-choice question, you’ll select 1 answer out of 4 to 5 options and mark your choice on the AP answer sheet using a pencil.
- Your total score on the multiple-choice section is solely based on the number of correct answers. There are no penalties for incorrect answers or unanswered questions.
- The latter part of the exam typically comprises free-response questions, where you’re tasked with generating your own responses. Depending on the exam, your responses may take the form of essays, solutions to problems, or spoken responses. Generally, you’ll write your responses in pen within the free-response exam booklet.
